## Use it when

- Adoption is the problem: search ranked by query-log popularity surfaces the tables people actually use, before anyone documents anything.
- Analysts live in SQL: Compose is a query editor inside the catalog, with TrustCheck warning when a query touches flagged data.
- You are shortlisting an enterprise platform against Collibra and want the one that starts from discovery and adds governance.
- A regulated buyer needs an on-premises deployment path, which is rare among modern commercial catalogs.

## Think twice when

- The platform team wants to install and evaluate before talking to sales; pricing is not published and licensing is by named-user tiers.
- Your first need is heavyweight policy and approval workflow; Collibra starts from that end.
- There is no budget for an enterprise contract; DataHub and OpenMetadata cover discovery and lineage without one.

## How it runs

The Alation Cloud Service, or on-premises on your own infrastructure. Query Log Ingestion runs on a schedule against the warehouse's logs to compute popularity and lineage; 50-plus connectors reach sources through the Open Connector Framework, which is public, so a missing connector can be built. Data quality is a module inside the catalog rather than beside it.
